Our Story

Making Wine Since

1991

THE WINERY – THE FAMILY

In Kanalia, Karditsa, at the foothills of the Agrafa mountains, Andreas Kontozisis and his family cultivate their 140 acres of privately-owned vineyard uncompromisingly, yet guided by the principles of organic and biodynamic farming. Since 1991, they have been vinifying their grapes with unwavering dedication and passion.

The vineyards are located at the foothills of Eastern Agrafa, in two important terroirs of the region: Kanalia and Dafnospilia. From the very beginning, they have been cultivated using organic methods.

The Art of Wine Making

Our approach is based on deep respect for nature and humanity, and a constant exploration of what the land can offer us without intervention. This is reflected in the organic and natural wines we produce, each one tied to a specific variety and vineyard parcel.

All tasks are carried out by hand — both in the cultivation and care of the vines, as well as during vinification.

Our vision and goal is to responsibly produce high-quality wines where authenticity and consistency are in perfect balance.

Our Vision

  • The purpose of Kontozisis Vineyards, through innovative practices, is to apply methods that highlight the raw material — in this case, to fully express the unique character of the Karditsa terroir.
  • The revival of the rare local red variety LIMNIONA, which began with Kontozisis Vineyards in 1991, and the production of high-quality wines from it, has always been the core vision and driving force behind the winery’s operations and initiatives.
  • Kontozisis Vineyards’ approach as an organic winegrowing and winemaking estate is rooted entirely in deep respect for nature and a continual exploration of what it can offer us.
  • A fundamental pillar of our philosophy is the coexistence of the old and the new — utilizing technology and the most modern methods to bring out, as vividly as possible, the unique identity of the Karditsa vineyard, with the Limniona variety as its flagship, along with our other wines.
